Middle Passage Freewrite
The Middle Passage was awful. Slaves were packed together so tightly they could barely breathe. They didn’t even want to breathe the air that was around them. It smelt like death and decay. It made them think of how hopeless their situation was. They were given hardly any food or water. Why did they whip him when he refused food? Wouldn’t they have been happy with one less person to give food to? Were they angry because the food was to make him stronger when he got to America? The pictures show what slaves went through, but not really. It doesn’t really show the emotion behind the experience. They don’t really show anything besides the slaves being on the ship. What about when they were so desperate to escape they threw themselves off the ship even though they knew it meant certain death? Not just one person got thrown off. The slaves were chained together so it was more like five people being thrown in the ocean. If they didn’t have any food did they ever resort to cannibalism? Why couldn’t they revolt before they were put on the ship? There were enough of them to fight back against the English…why? Everything. Why? How?
